Your new favorite model is ready when you are.

One of the best parts of Apple Upgrade is that you decide when it’s time for something new. Upgrade at the end of your 12, 24, or 36-month term, or earlier for a fee Footnote 1. Simply choose your new favorite model to lease, then upgrade and return your current device in good working condition once the new one arrives. Footnote

Apple devices: iPhone models, back exterior, front exterior, multiple colors, iPad, MacBook, Apple Watch

Here's what to expect when it's time to upgrade.

  • Get a heads-up. We'll let you know when you're eligible to upgrade with no upgrade fee. If you'd like to upgrade early, you can do that too, for a fee.

  • Start a new lease. Select the device you want to upgrade, then choose your next model and re-apply with Apple Upgrade.

  • Add peace of mind. Protect your new device with an AppleCare plan to enjoy a worry-free return.

  • Get connected. Leasing a new iPhone? You’ll need to activate with AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon. We’ll make it easy to connect and keep your existing number.

  • Safely transfer data. Keep your device until the new one arrives. When it does, we can help guide you through data transfer so you can get started effortlessly.

  • Return your current device. We’ll send you a prepaid kit so you can return your current device by mail or at an Apple Store, and officially close your existing lease.

Klarna, the leasing provider, can help you with questions about your lease and monthly payments. You can easily start a chat with them, and view more details about the status of your lease, in the Klarna app.

Need support? We’ve made that easy, too.

Apple Upgrade comes with the kind of expert support you can only get from Apple. From choosing the right product for you to enrolling, upgrading, and making the most of your new device, we’re always here to help.

  • When you’re eligible to upgrade to a new device without an upgrade fee, you can simply close your existing lease, then choose your next device and start a new lease. The new lease starts when the new device ships or is picked up at an Apple Store. Once you have your new device, transfer your data and return your current device to Apple in good working condition.

  • You’ll be eligible to upgrade to a new device with no upgrade fee once you’ve completed all your monthly payments, according to your lease agreement. For example, if you chose a 24-month lease term when you enrolled in Apple Upgrade, you can upgrade to a new device once you’ve made 24 monthly payments. You can also upgrade earlier for a fee Footnote 1, if you’d like.

  • Yes, you can still upgrade. But if you don't have AppleCare coverage and your device is not returned in good working condition, Klarna will charge you a one-time damage fee. You can repair your device back to good working condition before you return it to avoid this fee.

If your device is damaged and you have an AppleCare plan, you may be charged a service fee after it is received and assessed for damage. For additional information on fees, learn more about AppleCare coverage.

  • You’ll need to return your current device back to Apple within 14 days of receiving your new one. If your device isn’t returned within this timeframe, you’ll continue to be charged for your original lease according to the lease terms, in addition to the monthly payments for your new leased device.

  • Once you upgrade, we’ll send you a prepaid kit to return your current device through the mail, or you can drop it off at an Apple Store.

  • When you’re ready to return your leased device, the prepaid return kit we send you will include instructions on how to prepare and package it.

  • You'll need to close your existing lease by paying an early termination fee equal to the total of your unpaid monthly Apple Upgrade lease payments (including taxes and fees), and any damage fee.

Once you’ve closed your lease, you can select your next device, choose Apple Upgrade as your payment option, and submit a new application at checkout.

  • Yes. If you would like to exit your lease prior to the end of your initial lease term, you can pay an early termination fee. This fee is equal to the total of your unpaid monthly lease payments, including applicable taxes and fees, through the end of the initial lease term. You’ll also need to return the device to Apple within 14 days.

If you prefer to keep the device, you can also buy it outright through your Klarna account. You’ll be charged a purchase option fee equal to the list price of the device, plus applicable taxes, minus any lease payments or down payment you’ve made, and any remaining credits for your trade-in device.

  • No. As long as you make all of your payments, any accessories you financed through Klarna are yours to keep.

  • At the end of your lease, you can do one of the following:

    • Upgrade and return your current device
    • Leave the program and return your current device
    • Buy the device outright with a one-time payment from your Klarna account

Please note that for each option, applicable taxes and fees may apply.

You have six months to decide which option is right for you. During this time, you’ll be charged your monthly payment until you take action. If a trade-in credit was applied to your lease at the time of enrollment, your payments will also increase during this six-month period because the credit is applied only to your initial lease term. If no action is taken at the end of the six-month period, Klarna will charge you the purchase option fee under your lease agreement to buy the device outright.

  • You’ll continue to be charged monthly for your original lease until we receive your returned device. Any amount you pay while your device is in transit will be refunded to you.

  • If you’re leasing an iPhone through Apple Upgrade, you can upgrade to any eligible iPhone (subject to eligibility and approval). If you want to lease a different product, such as Apple Watch, you can submit an application to enroll an additional product in Apple Upgrade. All your leased products will appear on the Manage devices page.

  • Yes. We’ll reach out and let you know when you’ve made enough monthly payments to upgrade without an upgrade fee. You can opt out of these notifications in the Apple Store app notification settings.

  • If you’re leasing an iPhone, you’ll need to connect to AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon when you enroll. You can lease an iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch without a carrier connection.
